Water Safety Instructor Course

The Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department will be offering an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course. This 30 hour course is dedicated to developing the skills you will need to instruct and plan courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program. This course will be tailored to meet the individual needs of each participant.

The course will be a blended learning course so each student can work at their own pace and schedule time with the instructor when they complete each class. Participants must have passed the pretest before registering online. Course Prerequisites

 Water Safety Instructor Candidates must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Swim the following strokes consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, level 4:
    • Front crawl for 25 yards
    • Back crawl for 25 yards
    • Breaststroke for 25 yards
    • Elementary Backstroke for 25 yards
    • Sidestroke for 25 yards
    • Butterfly for 15 yards
  • Maintain position on back one minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
  • Tread water for one minute

Basic Swim Instructor Candidates Must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Swim the following strokes consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 3.
    • Front crawl                                            25 yards
    • Breaststroke                                         25 yards
    •  Elementary Backstroke                       25 yards
    • Sidestroke                                             25 yards

Course Details

Course dates:

January 30 |  6:00-9:00 pm

February 20 |  6:00-9:00 pm

March 13|  6:00-9:00pm

Class/pool dates:

Course dates will vary based on each individual’s schedule as well as the instructors and must be completed between February 1 and March 12 .  Each candidate must spend approximately 20 one hour sessions at the recreation center between February 1 and March 12.  Each candidate must request a preset time with the instructor(s) in writing prior to scheduling onsite learning sessions.  . 

You must attend all session to become certified.  There will be a written test on March 13, you must complete the test with an 80% or higher.
